2016 .. my "hard year"
forged at the hand of physical strife
indelibly stamped by death

2016 .. my "hard year"
ushered in with fear
sustained by grief

2016 .. my "hard year"
plagued by depression
debilitated ... frozen

I should despise it
this poisoned bit of time
mountainous misfortunes

But like that old blue building
weathered and standing
just over the wall

I open again my rickety door
allowing new tools
a place to reside

Illuminating this worn exterior
for any passerby
to enjoy

From angst to gratitude
for this new life
I am humbled

Humility and Joy created new found courage to declare

"Fuck the real world .. I'm an Artist"

in 2016 .. my "hard year"

Bill, Stopping back in to read your lines and appreciate the resounding "fuck the real world" credo. How apt for me tonight as I try to get my head straight about tomorrow's challenge. While I have practiced and taught yoga for many years, while I feel good and rewarded in doing this, usually one-on-one, tomorrow I am teaching two break-out sessions at Roanoke's Mindfulness Conference. I will be facing LARGE classes and am most definitely not versed in group presentations--a terrifying possibility. It may not sound like much, but it is a big step out of my comfort zone.

As I have thought about it and practiced, I looked in a mirror this morning & said: "Fuck it. You have worked and studied and practiced this beautiful body/breath/mind art form for years. You have something to give and it is a privilege and an honor to be asked to do this." "Enough now, lift your head up and claim your place in the world." It is time to stop being afraid to put myself out there. So, thanks for the reminder to let go of that goofy world "out there."

Selfishly, I am glad to be late to this party so that I can take in all of the love that shines through these responses, every bit of it deserved to a wonderful man, artist and fighter on behalf of the good in life.

Bill, your beautiful and honest post made me think that you might appreciate the book "Broken Open" by Elizabeth Lesser as much as I have during my "hard year." And at the very least, please look up the poem "The Holy Longing" by Goethe which she features in it so poignantly.
