In a flash it became clear
a concept apparent
yet elusive

Elusive because we all need
need to be recognized
need to be stroked

Want
want to be successful
want to be a name

We need it and want it so badly
so badly we attempt to
Impress

Impress for recognition
for accolades
for reward

Such a destructive force
this need to impress
buries our gifts

Life then becomes
intellectually perverse ass kissing
giving what we perceive they want

Striving to impress
begging approval
abandoning our creative selves

Those who will be truly creative
tapping into their innate gifts
must resist this urgent appeal of ego

We must trust the introspective self
exercise courage
in expressing our truth

Impressors die haunted by their cowardice
cowardice born of false ego feeding endeavors
joyous lives lost in fear of rejection by others

Expressors give their inner truth despite all
euphorically sharing the purity of their souls
take it or leave it

Impress them or
Express your true Self
Commerce or Creativity ?

When we awaken
our newly exercised stretch for improvement
is clearly reminiscent of flowers following the sun
inviting soft caress
absorbing soothing warmth
imploring light to stimulate rejuvenating cleanse

If only it was so simplistic
absorbing solar solace
reveling in newfound reality
instantly casting off past idiocy
shedding vile skin bearing tattooed stories
tales of shameful acts done by what we were

All the while as growth occurs
charging through new self
race those naturally hopeful musings
hoping those who witnessed what was before
will embrace what is flower borne from thorn
standing humbly in the sunlight

Ego ..
on a two by three and a half inch glossy exclamation
declaring expertise
defiant
challenging any and all doubters

It is there
before your eyes
physical entity
proof of classification
substantiating exactly who I am

irrefutable evidence
that I too am brilliant
by association

Yesterday I reached for a card
confidently awaiting the impressed look
as I produced my bona fide credential
I didn't have one
I don't exist

anticipation

rainbow of emotion attached to life's travel
always grasping hope

soaring above all else
primal screaming of the soul
discovering ultimate pleasure
taken and given .. given and taken

The walking paths of Tucson are a wonderful gift. Over one hundred twenty miles of paved paths, designed exclusively for walkers, runners, and bike riders. These beautiful creations follow dry river beds which carry monsoon rain waters throughout the city. The riverbed "washes" are filled with life, both plant and animal, giving one the feeling of being immersed in nature when in actuality there may be a major road just thirty or forty yards away. Tucson's paths are among the many reasons we decided to make The Old Pueblo our new home.

As I continue my own path through life, I find Tucson's walking paths to be an integral part of existence. They have become my path of contemplation. Creators of this remarkable achievement, I salute you and give one man's thanks for your vision. "Muchas Gracias", "Mahalo", et "Merci" for this invaluable gift.

Nothing I have discovered is more stimulating to my thought process than time spent alongside the pure nature of planet Earth. Casting off negativity and embracing positive creative flow seems to be the norm as one shares the trail with countless categories of fascinating desert plants and creatures. I have felt the same exhilaration of thought while enjoying Pu'u road on Kauai, strolls through the wonders of Paris, and stimulating hikes in the Rockies of Wyoming and Colorado. No matter where we happen to be, nature sits waiting .. waiting for us to join Her for a magical stroll, accompanied by a generous message of enlightenment.

A few days ago I was running on my favorite portion of trail when the following thought came to me: "I wonder how large a container it would take to contain all the spit, sweat, and snot that has been cast upon this path by bikers, walkers, and runners since it was constructed?"

I continued running and suppose those people who approached me head-on from the other direction wondered why I had such a ridiculous grin on my face.
