Big Toe

The need to write is with me
what, I just don't know
searching for the discipline
longing for some flow

Ideas dance across my mind
too quickly to be caught
frustration builds with passing time
while digging for a plot

What can I give my readers
what will bring a smile
quips and quotes and prose I seek
along the mental mile

Writers depression settles in
that place I fear to go
eyes drop slowly to the floor
then gaze at my big toe

Ancient protrusion .. ugly illusion
forerunner of naked feet
clip it and paint it however you want
big toe will never be sweet

Let it be said and records be read
though beauty it will not display
big toe inspired one writer
to record something witty today

Always beneath you holding your weight
constantly ready to go
when tumultuous distractions fill your plate
try gazing at your big toe

I think you are where every writer is, unless he/she has already found his/her nitch. Good luck with yours. You WILL get there.

I've just named my big toe "Nichey" that should fix everything! But wait .. does niche rhyme with beach or sound the same as itch .. oh, the continued trials and tribulations of a writer's life ... arrghh !! Smiling here as I consider taking my itch to the beach. Ah, there it is, the next great novel .. "Itch to the Beach" .. Thanks, Dad, for this revelation! :-)

What more can a man ask than to give someone a smile and be recognized for doing it !

Too funny, your ode to the big toe! You're right in thinking the big toe is not too beautiful, but if for some reason a person were to lose his big toe, his balance would be seriously impaired. How could you stub your toe if you didn't have a big toe? ... deep thought there.

Seriously, I am acquainted with a lady who works as a physical therapist who was born missing her shoulders and arms. You should see her write with her toes and accomplish all of her other duties with her legs and feet. She is fabulous; patients make special requests in order to have her as their therapist after surgery, etc.

Forgive me for getting on my soapbox. Now when I gaze at my big toe, I'll think of many things! My thanks and best wishes.

Cynthia, thank you for mentioning the physical therapist. Her accomplishments suddenly make "writers block" look like the ridiculous notion it is. So many do so much with so little ... I am thankful for your reminder.

Mahalo et Merci,
Bill
