Pebbles in my car mat

Driving home from Lihue  yesterday, I finally got tired of feeling the small pebbles that had found their way onto the floor mat of my car.   Pulling over to remedy the situation,  I carefully  removed the mat and gave it a good roadside "shake and pound".  I was now a "dust ball",  but  the mat was clean and ready to massage a bare foot as it tapped  out the rhythm of driving music.

It was a busy day on the road .. lots and lots of traffic as summer visitors, mostly families with children who are now out of school, arrive to enjoy the beautiful Garden Island.  A steady stream of cars flew by me as locals and tourists alike made their way to the next adventure.  Standing next to the road was loud and chaotic .. almost sinister in the way those metallic capsules flew by .. promising harm with no conscience should one make the mistake of venturing onto the roadway.  Turning around, I was facing a growth of delicate trees just fifteen or twenty feet off the highway.  The trees had obviously been planted for a purpose, but I couldn't tell you what that purpose is.  What I can tell you is this ... near the chaos of that roadway is complete silence and tranquility.  The trees stand there .. serene, straight, and tall .. completely oblivious to the monsters screaming by them just feet away.   They are calm and focused.
I suppose we only have to make the decision to  join them ...

The contrast in simply turning 180 degrees was amazing, Sally. Those trees were focused on one thing ... existence. Bill

Awesome blog Bill, so often we fail to see the amazing beauty and serenity that is only inches away. Thanks for the reminder to simply open our eyes, to all that surrounds us. And to think it simply took pebbles on your floor mat to open that vision! Thanks to the pebbles.

Which is why Tree is one of my favorites in yoga practice ~ over time, with practice, one truly can be transported to moments if serenity. A soft gaze for focus, deep easy breaths, and: away you go. Your photo of the trees is beautiful. Bonsoir from a rainbow-filled sky in CLT.

Merci Pat .. for some reason your comment brings to mind one of my favorite phrases en français .. "Je suis très content d'être ici ce soir" ... which is how we can feel during meditative moments .. and is surely how nature feels at all times. Merci beaucoup for that reminder and Mahalo Nui for your comment. Aloha, Bill

WOW BILL - you are flying high with this post!!! Of course the trees are showing us the way to peace, raising their arms in joy and thankfullness - standing strong along lifes roadway...waiting for you to come along and hear their silent message in the mist of stones along our pathway and caos (sp?) in the streets. You are brilliant today...I am hearing your voice.

XOXO

Jules

JULES ... Thank You for those kind words .. I'm so thankful for the shared experience with you. Your interpretation is lovely. Capturing a good thought and putting it on paper is absolutely worthless without appreciative readers. Thank you !! Bill

There is something about trees which speaks to us all just as these roadside trees did to you. A few years ago I spent many hours watching the tall loblolly pines and sycamores from a window as I lay in bed before and after back surgeries. I found them fascinating and at the same time comforting. Now this is your "mother" speaking and I hope that you won't mind. Please don't ever stop alongside a busy highway (even if you are well off on the shoulder as you were) unless it is a true emergency. So frequently people are killed when a car swerves just as it reaches a car parked alongside the road. This should never happen, but it does. A concerned reader wishing you a "bon week-end".

Cynthia, I appreciate that advice and will certainly remember it the next time I think about pulling over. After all, a few pesky pebbles are certainly not worth getting smished, smashed, and smooshed !! I do hope your back is much better these days. As a person who can throw his back out by smiling crosswise, I know the debilitating pain it causes and do hope you aren't living with that on a daily basis. Merci beaucoup for you comments and concern ... they are both truly appreciated. Mahalo et Merci, Bill
